The water level of river Rhine is currently on an all-time low, impacting transport by ship. Despite maximum shift to alternative means of transport (pipeline, trucks and rail), not all raw materials can be supplied to BASF’s Ludwigshafen site.
TDI Production Hampered
Therefore, BASF will have to stop the TDI production in Ludwigshafen. Restart of production depends on improved Rhine water level. TDI is a core component for polyurethanes.
It is used to a large extent for:
- Adhesives
- Sealants
- Elastomers
- Automotive industry
- Furniture
- Mattresses
- Cushions
- Wood coating
- Transportation
BASF is in close contact with its customers. The plant has an annual capacity of 300,000 metric tons of TDI.
